Hypnotherapy for Fear of Flying: How to Finally Feel Calm in the Air

'hypnotherapy for fear of flying London

Imagine turning up at the airport feeling calm, relaxed and genuinely excited about your holiday. If you struggle with flying anxiety, that probably feels like a distant dream. But it does not have to stay that way.

Hypnotherapy for fear of flying, combined with EFT tapping, can help you become the person who simply gets on a plane and goes. No more weeks of anxious preparation. No more relying on medication or needing several drinks at the bar before take-off. Just you, feeling ready.

What does flying anxiety actually look like?

Flying anxiety comes in many different forms, and no two people experience it in exactly the same way. Clients I have worked with have described experiences including:

  • Fear of dying, where every bout of turbulence feels like a sign the plane is about to crash
  • Fear of suffocation, because the plane feels like a small, enclosed space without enough air
  • Pre-holiday overwhelm: the anxiety of sorting work, children, packing, the house and the pets before you can even think about getting on a plane, leading to someone on the verge of panic as they get to the plane
  • Anxiety about being away from home and worrying that something bad will happen while you are gone

If any of these resonate, you are not alone and you are certainly not being irrational. Your brain and body have simply learned a pattern of response that feels very real and very powerful. The good news is that patterns can be changed.

Using hypnotherapy, my clients have been able to unpick the thoughts that are at the root of the anxiety and stress they felt about flying and, between us, we have worked to challenge these and replace them with something more helpful. We have worked through, and reduced, the negative emotions associated with unpleasant past experiences of flying, and put in place some new coping strategies and techniques.

Why thinking your way out of the fear does not work

You already know that flying is statistically one of the safest forms of travel. Your brain probably accepts this. But knowing something intellectually and feeling safe in your body are two very different things. You have tried thinking and rationalising your way out of the fear, but it hasn’t worked.

Flying anxiety is a body-based response. When the alarm bells ring, no amount of logic can switch them off in the moment. That is why hypnotherapy for fear of flying works differently to simply reading the safety statistics or trying to think yourself calm. It works at the level where the fear actually lives: in your nervous system, not just your thoughts.

How hypnotherapy for fear of flying works

Using hypnotherapy and EFT tapping, we work together to identify and address the specific thoughts and emotions at the root of your flying anxiety. Every client is different, which is why the approach is tailored to your particular experience of the fear, not a generic script.

In our sessions together, we will:

  • Explore the aspects of flying that trouble you most
  • Work through and reduce the negative emotions tied to past experiences
  • Challenge unhelpful patterns of thinking and replace them with something more useful
  • Use focused attention and imaginary exposure techniques to teach your body that flying is safe
  • Put new coping strategies in place that you can use before and during a flight

There is no such thing as a stupid fear. Hypnotherapy is about resolving the fear, not judging it.

What does a course of sessions look like?

Most clients find that 6 to 8 hourly sessions, spaced weekly or fortnightly, gives them the results they are looking for. It does not matter whether you have experienced hypnosis before: I will guide you through everything you need to know and teach you the skills as we go.

Practising in between sessions is important and I will give you the tools to do this. Think of it like learning any new skill: the more you practise, the more natural it becomes. You are essentially teaching your body a new response, and that takes a little repetition.

Does hypnotherapy for fear of flying actually work?

Many of my clients have freed themselves from flying anxiety after working through a course of sessions together. The approach I use is cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy, which draws on well-established, evidence-based methods for treating anxiety.

Fear of flying often develops following an unpleasant experience, or gradually through a pattern of catastrophic thinking. The brain starts to predict danger, and that prediction becomes automatic. Hypnotherapy is particularly effective at updating these patterns and at helping people change their response to situations the brain has labelled as threatening.

You do not need more information about why flying is safe. You need your body to feel safe. That is exactly what we are working towards.
