Are you one of those people who dreads the summer holidays? Everyone else is getting excited and planning which foreign sites they want to see, which books will entertain them on that sun lounger, but you have a growing feeling of dread, because the holidays mean that you will have to face getting on a plane.
Do you wake up with nightmares for a few days before you have to fly – dreaming of plane crashes or other disasters? Do you feel a growing sensation of anxiety in your stomach as the suitcases appear and clothes in piles begin to dot the bedrooms?
Many people deal with their problem by self-medicating with alcohol before or during the flight, or they get through it by clutching their travelling companion with a white-knuckled grip.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. You might ask ‘how do I overcome my fear of flying’? Therapy, such as EFT/tapping and hypnosis can help you to tackle your phobia in a gentle and non-threatening way. Fear of flying can be quite different for different people. One person might have a fear of being high, another might be terrified of turbulence, while a third person is really afraid of not being in control.
This summer, I am offering all my clients the option to have four sessions for the cost of three so that they can beat fear of flying, relax and feel positive about summer holiday plans.
Using EFT and visualisation, therapy can get to the roots of the fear and begin to clear it. It will teach you helpful relaxation techniques that will be of benefit to you in other aspects of your life as well as during a flight. It is a gentle process – you won’t be asked to actually experience your fear and wait for the anxiety to subside, which can be one of the worries people have about dealing with a phobia. I will show you how to beat your flying phobia and your brain will learn that the perceived threat it experiences when flying is not founded in reality and be able to understand that the stress response can be dialled down. You really don’t need a bloodstream flooded with stress hormones. You are allowed to relax.
It can also be a very quick process. Some clients will feel better immediately after only one session, while some others may need two or three sessions to really feel comfortable about flying.
So how does it work? The first step is to talk through exactly how your phobia affects you. For example: When do you start to worry? How does it feel in your body? What thoughts run through your mind?
Next, I teach you how to relax, much more deeply than before and learn how to access these feelings of relaxation whenever you need them. Relaxation is a very important and useful skill as we can use it to counter feelings of anxiety whenever we encounter them in life. As it is impossible to be both relaxed and anxious, it’s a key life skill to develop.
I also use a type of therapy called EFT, which you can read more about on my website here (), which helps us to gently explore your thoughts and feelings and helps your brain to update its view of flying as something that is threatening.
Finally we use visualisation and imagery to mentally rehearse travelling on a plane feeling calm and confident to enable you to change your habitual negative thinking patterns to something more helpful.
So if you would like to enjoy the summer this year, get in touch and find out how EFT and hypnotherapy could help.
