My thoughts about...

What is pain and where do you feel it?

There are sayings such as “Pain is all in the mind” that strike us as nonsense when we stub our toe or crash into a door. But there is definitely an element of truth in it, that applies very importantly to the pain that we experience following a serious injury. In fact, I’m not going to refer to it as pain, but as ‘uncomfortable sensations’. We need to learn how to help ourselves heal from injury by tackling what is happening in our minds as well as our body!

Earlier this year I had a stupid fall and injured my hip! I needed surgery (to insert a screw like the one in this picture!), followed by some weeks of recovery to get back to my normal activities.

I recently shared what I learned from this experience with all visitors to the Maris Practice website. Some of you may know that this is the osteopath practice where I see clients a couple of days each week. Coupled with the skills of the osteopath, changing how you perceive the sensations in your body from pain to healing, can be tremendously helpful!
